Oklahoma Consumer Complaints
The Oklahoma Attorney General cannot by law offer you any legal advice or act as an attorney for you, an individual. Only when large numbers of Oklahoma residents are caught by unfair and deceptive practices can the Attorney general investigate and bring enforcement actions. It can however, through its Consumer Protection Unit provide conciliation services that will help an individual in resolving complaints against a business. As always, education provides you the best way to prevent fraud. The Consumer Protection Unit has publications to help you make good decisions in the marketplace.
If you have a complaint against a business, first contact that business and try to reach a solution on your own. Most problems can be resolved by talking to the salesperson or manager. If you are not satisfied, contact the owner, the company headquarters, or the manufacturer of the product. If the business will not resolve the problem, consider other possible remedies such as Small Claims Court or a consultation with a private attorney.
To receive help from the Attorney General's office, you must fill out and return a complaint form to the Consumer Protection Unit, Office of the Attorney General, 4545 N. Lincoln Blvd., #260, Oklahoma City, OK 73105. Remember, State law prohibits the Attorney General from giving individual citizens legal advice, opinions or acting as their private attorney. If you feel you need legal advice, you will have to turn to a legal aid society, private attorney, or other organization. The Attorney General can't file a lawsuit to recover money or property for you. Suits can only be filed against companies that violate the laws protecting consumers and these lawsuits are filed to protect the public, not private interests. Often another local, state, or federal agency will have the legal authority or more expertise handle your specific problem and you may be referred to one of them. You will be notified as your complaint progresses through the complaint process, do not call for status.
