North Dakota Farms

ATVs are now another important work vehicle on North Dakota farms. However, these vehicles are often looked upon as toys and not something that requires appropriate safety measures like a tractor. Many farm chores such as hauling feed or getting to the field are now being handled with the use of an ATV. Children, more and more often, are being given these tasks and the ATV to ride on. Children are the most likely to operate the ATV in an unsafe manner like driving too fast, taking unnecessary risks, accepting riders and not wearing the appropriate or required protective equipment. Accidents involving ATVs drive up insurance costs when proper precautions aren't taken.

Nationwide, children under the age of 16 represent over 30% of all ATV-related emergency room visits. ATV operators under 16 are nearly four times more likely than ATV operators over 16 to experience an injury requiring emergency treatment.

Wearing the right gear is important. This means a helmet, eye protection, and other protective gear. A helmet is the most critical piece of safety gear for an ATV operator. Make sure the size is right . Eye protection in the form of a face shield or goggles will protect eyes from rocks, twigs, dirt, and insects that can cause the operator to loose control or damage the eyes. You also want your child in protective clothing, gloves, boots, long-sleeve shirt and pants.

Treat your ATV like your tractor. Keep it in good operating condition. Be sure to check the tires and wheels, controls and cables, and lights and electrical system on a regular basis. Teach your children how to safely start the ATV and how to handle it in different riding conditions.

ATVs are a part of a farm, and they pose as many risks as a tractor. Reduce the risks, and the number of injuries by teaching and following good safety practices. If there are youth safety programs in your area, send your children and help them build the skills necessary for operating an ATV safely. Don't put your farm assets in jeopardy by not following these common sense precautions. Mistakes can be costly!
