Maryland Consumer Complaints

If you are a resident of Maryland and have a consumer dispute with a Maryland business, then you should look into the possibility of using the Maryland Consumer Protection Division's mediation service to help you. They can not handle all complaints, some must be directed to other agencies, and some must be fought in the courts.

To start the mediation process, you will have to fill out a complaint form and mail it and copies of all the documents you have that pertain to the dispute to the Maryland Attorney General. You can talk to the Consumer Protection Division to get the complaint form and ask questions at 410-528-8662 or toll-free in Maryland at 1-888-743-0023.

Mediation depends on both sides willingness to come to an agreement. Unless the business and you are willing to cooperate with the mediation efforts there is nothing the mediator can do. If both parties agree to mediation, it is a quick process, depending on caseload. If mediation fails or either party does not agree to it, then the next step in your dispute may be the Maryland Arbitration Program. This arbitration service is free. It also resolves disputes quickly and at a time convenience of both parties. It is much better than a trial at a Judge's convenience, with lawyers arguing in legalese. Again, both sides must accept arbitration or this is not an option. If you or the business turns down arbitration then your only recourse will be to proceed with filing a private law suit in Small Claims Court or District Court.
